The coming Friday will witness the release of former showman Subhash Ghai's magnum opus, YUVVRAAJ. The movie looks grand, the music (Rahman) is of a high quality and the big star cast comprising Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Zayed Khan and Katrina Kaif, all look great on paper. Unfortunately, the excitement and hype that should have been there for such a lavish project is surprisingly missing. But we are prepared to be proved wrong and await a pleasant surprise!

Moving on to last week's new releases, let us first check out Karan Johar's Tarun Mansukhani directed DOSTANA. The Abhishek, John, Priyanka and Bobby (special appearance) laugh riot was released at 91 cinemas of Bombay–Thane thru Yash Raj Film Distributors and was off to an excellent start. Outside of Bombay, the opening was excellent in the big cities but fair elsewhere. Trade predicts that DOSTANA will find friends in the cities (the most important being Bombay and the Overseas circuit) but their patronage won't be enough to recover the high price on an all–India level. The film has had a great start in the Overseas, grossing $503,485 from UK and $645,604 from US. The other release of last Friday, Vinay Pathak's Shashant Shah directed DASVIDANIYA was released at around 30 cinemas of Bombay–Thane thru Rajat Enterprises and was off to a poor start. In other circuits, the opening was similar. Trade predicts that DASVIDANIYA may be a sensitive and sincere attempt but it has little commercial value and may, therefore go almost unnoticed at the box–office.

Checking out the first week performance of Sanjay Dutt's EMI, the film just failed to achieve anything significant, barring to an extent Bombay. During its initial week EMI collected 1.20 crores from Bombay, 30 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.15 lakhs from Mehsana, 4.70 lakhs from Rajkot, 2.10 lakhs from Jamnagar, 2.15 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.25 lakhs from Gandhidham, 5.85 lakhs from Pune, 1 lakh from Nasik, 32 lakhs from Delhi city, 4.55 lakhs from Noida, 4 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.55 lakhs from Kanpur, 5.10 lakhs from Lucknow, 7.55 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2.35 lakhs from Faridabad, 5.20 lakhs from Nagpur, 5.10 lakhs from Indore, 5 lakhs from Jaipur, 20.55 lakhs from Hyderabad, 2.05 lakhs from Aurangabad and 1.50 lakhs from Mangalore. In its opening week the Saurabh R. Kabra directed EMI netted just around 5 crores from India. The Balaji Motion Picture Ltd. and Popcorn Motion Picture Pvt. Ltd. venture has turned out to be a heavy loser.

The movie that released with EMI, Rajshri's EK VIVAAH... AISA BHI could not pick up significantly despite strong emotional content. The collections are 6.60 lakhs from Bombay, 1.40 lakhs from Rajkot, 1.50 lakhs from Pune, 6 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.65 lakhs from Noida, 1.10 lakhs from Lucknow, 1 lakh from Agra, 1.15 lakh from Allahabad, 1.15 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 2.50 lakhs from Calcutta, 2.25 lakhs from Patna, 1.40 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.15 lakhs from Amravati, 2 lakhs from Raipur, 1.20 lakhs from Sehore, 13 lakhs from Jaipur, 1.75 lakhs from Udaipur, 1.15 lakhs from Bikaner, 4.35 lakhs from Hyderabad, 1.40 lakhs from Aurangabad, 1.35 lakhs from Parbhani, 1 lakh from Beed and 1.30 lakhs from Latur. Netting around 1.25 crores in its opening week from India, EK VIVAAH... AISA BHI may show some significant gains in the coming weeks because the film has gone in for a limited release and so many regions are still to see its release.
