The crisp new releases of this week and the real 'Diwali' crackers are Rohit Shetty's GOLMAAL RETURNS and Madhur Bhandarkar's FASHION. As per early indications the multistarrer GOLMAAL RETURNS has taken a great start, though it is not carrying good reports as opposed to the (expected) acclaim for Bhandarkar's FASHION. Trade feels that GOLMAAL RETURNS will have a good opening week (rather 9–days) to show and FASHION will do well in the cities based on positive feedback. What must be kept in mind is that both GOLMAAL RETURNS and FASHION are expensively priced ventures as compared to their cast and makers and so have to do more than a weekend (5–days) of good business.

Last weeks releases, Yash Raj Films and Walt Disney Pictures' animation film, ROADSIDE ROMEO and Samir Karnik's HEROES, could not quite carry their good momentum Monday onwards. Despite the fact that ROADSIDE ROMEO, released at 50 cinemas of Bombay thru Yash Raj Film Distributors had a good opening in the dull pre–'Diwali' days, it could not get the required patronization from kid audience (with elders) and suffered on account of that. Outside of Bombay the opening for ROADSIDE ROMEO was below the mark at many places and fairly good at some cities but the collections fell badly during the week days. The other release of the week, HEROES, released at 90 cinemas of Bombay thru Eros Multimedia Pvt. Ltd., saw quite a good start inspite of the dull pre–'Diwali' days. In other circuits, the opening was good in U.P. and several other stations of various circuits. Once again the collections fell Monday onwards, though not as badly as that of ROADSIDE ROMEO. Trade feels that HEROES will do much better than ROADSIDE ROMEO, but its high cost may prevent it from succeeding in a big way. In the Overseas, ROADSIDE ROMEO has been totally rejected, grossing a poor $41,770 from US and a very ordinary £31,620 from UK. On the other hand HEROES has done well grossing a decent $326,425 from the US and a fair £107,090 from UK.

Coming to composer–singer and actor Himesh Reshammiya's second film as an actor, KARZZZZ, the film fared quite badly at the multiplexes but was alright at single–screens. During the week KARZZZZ collected 90 lakhs from Bombay, 35.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1 lakh from Himmatnagar, 13 lakhs from Rajkot, 3 lakhs from Jamnagar, 3.65 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.60 lakhs from Surendranagar, 1.50 lakhs from Gandhidham, 1.25 lakhs from Adipur, 5.15 lakhs from Pune, 2.15 lakhs from Solapur, 3 lakhs from Nasik, 82 lakhs from Delhi City, 9.35 lakhs from Noida, 9.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 5 lakhs from Kanpur, 13 lakhs from Lucknow, 6.20 lakhs from Agra, 3.20 lakhs from Allahabad, 2.65 lakhs from Meerut, 4.50 lakhs from Aligarh, 2.65 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 1.60 lakhs from Muzaffarnagar, 10 lakhs from Gurgaon, 5.70 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.45 lakhs from Panipat, 30 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.15 lakhs from Guwahati, 9.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.35 lakhs from Jabalpur, 1.50 lakhs from Amravati, 2.10 lakhs from Raipur, 8 lakhs from Indore, 21.15 lakhs from Jaipur, 2.20 lakhs from Bikaner, 1.35 lakhs from Kota, 2.35 lakhs from Hyderabad, 3.10 lakhs from Aurangabad, 1.20 lakhs from Parbhani and 1.75 lakhs from Mangalore. During its opening week, the Satish Kaushik directed KARZZZZ has netted a very ordinary 10.50 crores from India. The Himesh–Urmila starrer is a big setback for its worldwide distributors, Big Pictures, who stand to lose almost 40–50 percent of their investment in the film.

The dubbed version of Arun Govil's SHOOT ON SIGHT fared poorly collecting 6.50 lakhs from Bombay, 2.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 6.15 lakhs from Delhi City, 1.30 lakhs from Ghaziabad and 1.35 lakhs from Nagpur. In its opening week SHOOT ON SIGHT (dubbed) has netted around 40 lakhs from India and even if we add the collections of the original English version, the total remains below 75 lakhs! It is obvious that SHOOT ON SIGHT is a huge debacle.

The Percept Picture Company and Funky Buddha Media's HELLO, based on Chetan Bhagat's best seller, One Night @ The Call Center, has scraped through as a below average fare, thanks to its reasonable prices.

The poor run of Sanjay Gadhvi's KIDNAP continues as the film is on its way out from the theatres. The film collected 10.15 lakhs from Bombay, 2.05 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.05 lakhs from Delhi City and 2 lakhs from Lucknow. Adding another 70 lakhs, KIDNAP is ending its run having netted 23.20 crores in three weeks from India. The Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan and Minissha Lamba starrrer has already failed commercially and critically, both in India and Overseas.

We conclude this week's column with Neeraj Pandey's Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher starrer, A WEDNESDAY. The film managed to get decent collections in big cities of Maharashtra due to tax exemption. Checking out the numbers, it collected 10 lakhs from Bombay, 1.65 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.60 lakhs from Delhi City, 1 lakh from Noida and 2.05 lakhs from Hyderabad. With another 35 lakhs, the hit plus A WEDNESDAY has netted a good 11.75 crores in seven weeks from India.
