In a matter of two months, Bollywood has been blessed with two more leading heroes - Farhan Akhtar and Imran Khan. And that's quite a welcome relief for the industry which has been reeling to catch hold of some more saleable names beyond the Khans, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt amongst a few others.
However, there are some similarities as well as study in contrast as well when one looks at the way Farhan and Imran have made their debut. For Farhan it was a tad unconventional beginning to his acting career even though ROCK ON does come with good commercial trappings. On the other hand for Imran it was a dream beginning with JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA being as path breaking in 2008 as QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK was two decades back.
What brings Imran and Farhan closer though is that both their debut films have been musicals. While A.R. Rahman contributes to the plot of JTYJN, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy ensure that the plot is kept running, courtesy their rock music. However, when compared to Imran, it was riskier for Farhan since he has earned quite some reputation as a director (DIL CHAHTA HAI, LAKSHYA, DON) and any goof as an actor in ROCK ON would have taken a good chunk of credibility out of him.
Coming to the box office response, while JTYJN fetched a bumper response, it has been the same in case of ROCK ON as well which has released on limited shows but it is still expected to do some very good business for itself in days to come. After a near 100% opening over the weekend, ROCK ON was 'rock solid' even on Monday and as per the reports, would be doing well for itself before embarking on yet another high in the second weekend.
Well, good for Bollywood which sees yet another debutant hero strike. And strike hard!
