With the lean month of Ramzan starting from second of September, the film business is all set to take a hit. However, the effect may somewhat be diluted by the Ganpati festivities in western India. All the same, the coming Friday sees two new releases in the form of Shiney Ahuja's HIJACK and the Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher starrer, A WEDNESDAY. While HIJACK has a lot at stake for Shiney and the taut action drama may appeal to a section of the audience, it is A WEDNESDAY that may surprise, based on its super handling and across-the-board acclaim from all those who have seen it.

Just like PHOONK, last Friday too had a big surprise in store as Abhishek Kapoor's Arjun-Farhan starrer ROCK ON! released at 60 cinemas of Bombay and suburbs by Big Pictures, was off to a superb start. Outside of Bombay, the opening was very good in select cities but dull in single-screen cinemas and smaller cities and towns. Trade expects that ROCK ON!! will do extremely well in Mysore circuit and in cities like Bombay, Pune, Delhi, Calcutta, Gurgaon and Hyderabad. However, business may not be on the same level in circuits like U.P., Bihar, C.P.C.I. and Rajasthan. The remaining releases of the week - C KKOMPANY, CHAMKU and MUKHBIIR - are all set to be losing prepositions, barring may be C KKOMPANY (to an extent) in Bombay and CHAMKU in U.P. and Bihar. While C KKOMPANY was off to a dull start, both CHAMKU and MUKHBIIR were poor across India.

The critically acclaimed MUMBAI MERI JAAN got some advantage of positive feedback and managed to get in some decent collections at select multiplexes of Bombay and Pune. During the week, MUMBAI MERI JAAN obtained 92 lakhs from Bombay, 11.25 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 25 lakhs from Pune, 1.75 lakhs from Surat, 2 lakh each from Goa and Nasik, 21 lakhs from Delhi City, 6 lakhs from Noida, 8 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.10 lakhs from Raipur, 2.50 lakhs from Indore, 1.50 lakhs from Jaipur, 11.50 lakhs from Calcutta, 8 lakhs from Hyderabad, 2 lakhs from Aurangabad, 11.55 lakhs from Bangalore, 1.50 lakhs from Mangalore and 3.70 lakhs from Madras. As per the makers, MUMBAI MERI JAAN has netted around 2.35 crores in its opening week from India. The well made film may at best hope for a below average status.
