This Teacher's day (September 5) the writer and creative director of Aamir Khan's TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, Amol Gupte, remembers his art guru, the late R.S. Nikhumb.

Amole refers to his Hansraj Morarji Public School teacher as the 'Little Big Man' (he was only 5'1''). On his first day in art class in the 8th standard, when Nikumbh introduced Amole to the work and style of Van Gogh., Gupte instinctly felt a connection with his teacher who seemed to understand the rebel in him. Later on, Amole modelled Aamir Khan's character in TAARE ZAMEEN PAR on Nikumbh.

Amole recalls that around 1998, he was into too many things like writing a book, involved in painting and simultaneously into theatre and entering cinema, basically struggling into getting a singular job. It was then that late Nikumbh encouraged him by saying to Amole, 'No one is taking your journey. It's nice to be a rolling stone. Just roll on and gather no moss!' Those words are still with Gupte.

Unfortunately, Amole could not pay his last respect to his teacher who died in 2001 due to Myeloma. Gupte came to know of it only a year later as he was pre-occupied with his own problems. He does keep in touch with late Nikumbh's daughter Meera and son Rajendra.
