Larger than life, commercial cinema has been the norm with filmmaker Karan Johar, right from his debut film KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI to his latest MY NAME IS KHAN (which is touted to be different!). Even the films which he produced (and not directed) under the banner of Dharma Productions like Soham Shah's KAAL, Nikhil Advani's KAL HO NA HO and Tarun Mansukhani's DOSTANA were all big budget ventures. And all have worked some big time with the audience who loves his kind of films, especially the urban audience.
However, with the film industry feeling the pinch of the global recession, Karan Johar too has realized the importance of small budget films which focus on core content. And in a move which could be disappointing for all those who love his lavish song and dance sequences and larger than life cinema, Karan has now moved ahead and is producing Ayan Mukerji's WAKE UP SID.
Despite the presence of one of the hottest newcomer in form of Ranbir Kapoor and the queen of parallel cinema Konkona Sen Sharma, the film is a relatively small budget venture, with emphasis on content, and not grandeur in the form of exotic foreign locales and lavish sets.
In fact Karan is very happy that the film which is under production is being completed within the budget frame and is sure that it will release as per schedule.
