There are some films that do not work at the box office despite all the merits. There could be quite a few factors going in it's favour but still something may go drastically wrong with the film (call it timing, perception or sheer luck) and it may crash land. Something similar happened to KURBAAN which released three weeks back. So what went wrong?
"Strictly speaking from box office standpoint, there were two major factors that went against KURBAAN", analysis producer Karan Johar, "First and foremost the subject itself which was stark with dark tones to it. Secondly, the film was squeezed between two outright entertainers - AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI and DE DANA DAN. It was obvious that audiences had made their choice."
Instead of coming up with usual 'the film will recover from satellite, home video and other rights' statements, Karan puts it on record that the film didn't offer mainstream entertainment due to which many chose to stay away.
"The film belonged to the kind that led to inherent debates. It makes you sit back, mull over the subject and share point of views. It had quite a few layers and sub layers. The film released at the time when mood of the nation was to walk in for entertainers rather than a dark subject like KURBAAN. It didn't have quintessential fun, songs and dance that Hindi movies have to offer and naturally, the audiences stayed away", says Karan in a calm tone.
Well, here is one man who is willing to admit that the film didn't find widespread acceptance from the audience without overtly defending the fate of the film.
