Think Chunnilal in the context of 'Devdas' and one remembers an ever smiling 'dhoti-kurta' clad middle aged man. For the current generation, 'Chunni' equates to Jackie Shroff, courtesy Sanjay Leela Bhansali's DEVDAS. However, in the current scheme of things, Anurag Kashyap has given an altogether different dimension and meaning to 'Chunni'.
a) He makes Chunni a pimp rather than just another regular customer at Chandramukhi's brothel b) Exit 'dhoti-kurta' and enter black suits and shades to match (something that he wears even in the darkness of night) with a pink car to boost c) Booze is passe, ecstasy is in. Something that Chunni introduces to Dev D. d) And no, he isn't overtly sympathetic and melodramatic. He is just plain and simple practical.
That's Chunni in Anurag Kashyap's DEV D which is played with aplomb by Dibyendu Bhattacharya. The name may not ring a bell to many but he is not someone who is new to the industry. After being seen in MONSOON WEDDING, he has also acted in notable films like MAQBOOL, AB TAK CHAPPAN, HAZARON KHWAISHEIN AISI, MANGAL PANDEY - THE RISING, BLACK FRIDAY and DHAN DHAN DHAN GOAL with most recent release being HULLA.
With DEV D, Dibyendu Bhattacharya joins the elite list of a dozen odd 'Chunnilal' that have been seen on the big screen in different versions of 'Devdas'. While Motilal, Uttam Kumar and Jackie Shroff have been etched in the memory of cine goers for years now, here is looking forward to more of this talented actor who has proven to be yet another addition to the list.
