It appears that director Nikhil Advani has certainly smartened up after the SALAAM E ISHQ (2007) debacle. Even though the multi-starrer was quite well made, it didn't perform well at the box office. Many attributed the lack of interest amongst the audience due to the film's excessive length that was close to 3.5 hours. As a result, Nikhil Advani has been conscious about the length of his upcoming release CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA. He has kept it just optimal i.e. 2.5 hour long.
Confirms Nikhil, 'Yes, it's true that I have kept CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA relatively shorter than SALAAM E ISHQ. I guess in case of the latter, I was a bit over indulgent and probably even a little stubborn. I didn't want to repeat the same mistake. This is why the film's running length is 2.5 hours long.'
What further surprises is that that his first cut was 10 minutes shorter and it was on the insistence of others associated with the film that he actually made a few scenes a little longer.
'Yes, my first cut as 2:20 hours. But then Rohan, Akshay and others said that I had to get some thehrav in the narrative. I hadn't chopped full-on scenes in any case, they were just few shots edited from the scenes to make them move fast. Their advice did make sense and I extended the film a little', says Nikhil.
In the current times when 2 hour long films are a norm, did he ever think about making CC2C in the similar format. He disagrees, 'Sorry, I couldn't make it just 2 hour long, as is the case with so many other movies that have released in the recent times. For a film of this scale and grandeur, 2 hour duration wouldn't have done justice to it.'
