BLACK FRIDAY, NO SMOKING and now the B-town's much-in-news DEV D, seems like filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is forming an altogether new world of cinema. Going by the kind of work he has been doing all these years whether as a writer or director one thing is pretty clear that being unconventional and out of the ordinary is becoming his forte.

''I am not deliberately trying to be unconventional as you say. It's just that I do what I want to do, I do what excites me or for that matter whatever I feel excited with'', Anurag counters at once. He adds further, ''I get bored with the idea of doing that has been done before; also for me the process of filmmaking is equally important.''

CHECK OUT: There is emotional violence in DEV D

So how does he manage to crack with such unique ideas? What's his source of inspiration? Is it the personal experiences or insights which incite him to be inventive each time? Smiles Anurag, ''I think some things come naturally to some people, so is the case with me. I look for the ideas in life, in and around me, that's the kind of filmmaker I am.''

'I don't believe in
playing safe'

Talking about his current film DEV D, in what way his devdas is different from the customary Devdas which we have seen? Says Anurag placidly, ''It's a film about today's youth, it's a film about how the persona of Devdas is still applicable, still exists in present day society. How the youth looks at love, romance & relationships and life in general.'' Further he explains, ''Now the times have changed, perspectives have changed. When Devdas was written alcohol was a big taboo, which is not so today. The whole premise of Devdas is miscommunication whereas this the age of communication. So in this way it differs.''

Okay agreed this new Devdas is quite different and contemporary than its older versions but he is shown as a drug addict, is Anurag trying to change Devdas' longtime prevailing image. Doesn't he think that this might render a negative image of Dev. D? With an energized tone asserts Anurag, ''That's exactly what this film is about, just because a person is self-destructing through alcohol or doing drug doesn't mean he is negative. That means he needs more emotional support from the society. The people should try to understand him rather declaring as a negative. The film is about the society more than the 3 characters, how it looks and judges people on the basis of their one mistake rather giving them a second chance. There are far more nasty people existing who are not alcoholic/drug addict. Society is a bunch of scared people''

CHECK OUT: DEV D marks a radical shift in film making

Is that the message of the film? ''Yes that's what the film tries to convey, it is very easy to judge somebody the way we want unless we come across the persons life'', agrees Anurag.

'Devdas' character was portrayed by superstars like Dilip Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan whom public look upon, considering this fact why Anurag zeroed in Abhay Deol the budding star to play Devdas. Replied Anurag in one breath, ''I look for actors and not for stars/superstars and I don't believe in playing safe. Aap har cheez branded toh use karte nahi ho. It's very easy to make a hit film with superstars. But will that be a good film as well. I would be very unhappy if my film is a huge hit but everybody says that it was a bad attempt. I would rather love to have people remember me for my flops than forget my hits in a year.''

If we look back than all of DEVDAS films have set huge records and has been extremely successful, so how confident is Anurag about his DEV. D, ''I am very confident that people will not loose money on this film. I am not here to break box-office records. I don't take any pride in saying that my film broke the records of GHAJINI or DDLJ or GADAR etc that's not my intention to make a film. I just don't want people to loose any money and shatter their faith in me. During NO SMOKING a lot of people went baffled and till date I blame myself for that. So I have corrected my mistake that I will make such films which people can relate to, can understand it.''
