MY BROTHER... NIKHIL
Ever since the release of MY BROTHER NIKHIL (2005), there have been multiple Bollywood films that have released which have touched upon or have been based on the 'gay' subject. While the biggest money spinner so far has been DOSTANA, it was a comic take on affairs with the protagonists actually 'not being' gay while pretending to be one. The recent release STRAIGHT too was based on the confusion around sexuality of the lead protagonist (Vinay Pathak) but eventually, this film too hasn't quite been able to make the cut.
In this regard, it is commendable to see MY BROTHER NIKHIL continuing to find audiences for itself worldwide even 4 years after its release. After winning dozens of awards ever since it's theatrical release and festival screenings, this Onir directed film has been selected for screening at the Vilnius International Film Festival ''Kino pavasaris'' (''Cinema Spring''). The film will have five screenings at the festival.
Confirms Onir who has already moved on to his next subject after the release of SORRY BHAI which was quite close to his heart, ''Yes, it is heartening to see the film continue to travel globally. Vilnius International Film Festival ''Kino pavasaris'' has selected MY BROTHER NIKHIL for multiple screenings over a period of time. I don't really mind packing my bags all over again and rush for the event. It's a great feeling whenever I watch the film with the audience. I would have seen it a 100 times by now and won't mind repeating the number.''
Starring Sanjay Suri and Purab Kohli as the lead protagonists, the film portrayed the life of the central protagonist, Nikhil, in the period 1987 to 1994, when AIDS awareness in India was considerably low. The film followed a unique narrative since Nikhil (played by Sanjay Suri) does not tell the story directly; the story is told to the viewer through the experiences and from the points of view of Nikhil's father, mother, boyfriend, lawyer, and his sister (played by Juhi Chawla).
Meanwhile Onir is currently in Berlin scripting for his next film with his German writer Merle Kroger.
