2 days, it was reported that Saif Ali Khan was looking forward to beginning work on RACE 2. There is some good news for him as well as the fans of RACE who are looking forward to the sequel in the offering. Buoyed by the success of AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI, producer Ramesh Taurani (of TIPS MUSIC FILMS) is now all set to begin shooting for RACE 2, sequel to Abbas Mustan directed smash-hit RACE (2008). While Taurani confirms the presence of Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor, he is tight lipped on Kareena Kapoor and other leading ladies gracing the film's stellar star cast.
'Come February/March 2010 and RACE 2 will go on floors', confirms Taurani, 'The film will certainly be bigger and better than the first part. If you thought that the twists and turns in RACE were deadly then watch out for the sequel. There are many more surprises in the offering.'
The ending of RACE was open ended and two of the main protagonists (Akshaye Khanna and Katrina Kaif) who were supposedly killed weren't actually shown dead on screen. Also, the relationship between the other two protagonists (Saif Ali Khan and Bipasha Basu) too had been left open for speculation.
This is why there is no surprise when Taurani states that Saif Ali Khan is definitely on board. 'Along with Saif, even Anil Kapoor is finalized for RACE 2. These two are integral elements of the film and cannot be done away with. For the rest of the star cast, the decision would be taken once the script is finalized. Expectations are so high from the film that we have to be doubly sure and get everything perfect before we start shooting for the film.'
He meanwhile takes a diplomatic stand when it comes to Kareena Kapoor being a part of RACE 2. While there have been reports that have indicated that she would be coming together with Saif for the film, Taurani denies that any leading lady has been signed so far.
'Whether Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif or Akshaye Khanna would be repeated in the sequel or if Kareena Kapoor would be added to the cast or would replace any of the earlier leading ladies is something on which I can't comment on right now. Let the script be ready and we will decide on the balance star cast', he says.
There were rumours that Abbas-Mustan may not necessarily be directing the sequel. Is that true? 'That's baseless', he quashes the rumour, 'They are certainly directing the sequel.'
Ramesh Taurani's comments are interesting because if he indeed plans to begin RACE 2 early next year, it would mean quite some effort for at least Saif Ali Khan since he too has plans for his much awaited AGENT VINOD to get on floors at the same time. How he would actually manage to simultaneously shoot for two thrillers (which are possibly set in different parts of the globe) is something interesting to wait and watch.
Moreover, Abbas Mustan too are pretty close to finalizing the cast of their THE ITALIAN JOB remake and may soon be announcing it's shooting time lines.
Says Saif Ali Khan, 'Though I am yet to sign on the dotted line, I am game for RACE 2. The makers are currently working on the script and though in principal I would love to do RACE 2, I should be able to give my final consent once the entire ground work is done. I am fine with the basic idea and now want to see a completely fleshed out script.'
Meanwhile Taurani is quite gung ho about the film's prospects, 'I can promise that just like RACE, this one too is an expensive thriller and would be shot on a lavish scale in foreign locations. The action too would be many notches higher.'
