His film making house Dharma Productions has just delivered a hit in WAKE UP SID (Ranbir Kapoor, Konona Sen) and is looking all set for another with KURBAAN (Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor) round the corner. However, Karan Johar is happy to declare that only box office is not really the driving factor for him anymore.
"Frankly, I am over and above box office today. With age and some dose of maturity coming in, I truly believe that I have grown as a film maker and hence am not just looking at crores out there", says the man who is doing quite well for himself with more than half a dozen films lined up for release in months to come.
With so many projects in the pipeline, is it really easy for a film maker to not think about box office and the much anticipated opening weekend collections?
"I guess numbers just get lost after a point in time while the quality of a product is remembered", reasons Karan, "I have learnt that remembrance that a film gets is far more important than what you end up gaining in the first weekend."
Karan's claim does come with enough validation here. After the mega Diwali weekend that saw BLUE, ALL THE BEST and MAIN AURR MRS KHANNA fighting for screen space, WAKE UP SID was kept on hold. The Ranbir Kapoor starrer did have two bountiful weeks for itself and all Karan Johar and Co. could have hoped was to see if they get some open space in week to follow. Well, that has pretty much happened with Khannas (MAIN AURR MRS KHANNA) making way for Sid and WAKE UP SID being revived.
"This is why I say that a living example of this phenomenon is WAKE UP SID", says Karan, "Yes, it opened well but what is even more heartening as a fact is that it is still being loved and watched weeks after it's release. That excites me."
