'This Is It' is a treat for at least those who are Michael Jackson fans. For those who were looking forward to the concert before his untimely death, this is not really a bad bargain. After all there are blockbuster tracks numbers like 'Beat It', 'They Don't Really Care About Us', 'Black Or White', 'Billie Jean' and many more that find a place in the film. This becomes all the more interesting since Michael Jackson comes up with new moves for these songs while making them further contemporary and presenting them to today's audiences.
What makes the film further special are the music videos which are interspersed along with Michael Jackson's dance on stage. For the concert, there were special videos made around 'Smooth Criminal', 'Thriller' and 'Earth Song' that catch audience's attention. In fact the entire 40s style vintage treatment given to 'Smooth Criminal' also acts as a comic relief. What gives the final punch though is 'Earth Song', a track on environment preservation.
Amongst the many highs in 'This Is It' is the piece that Michael Jackson does with one of his back up singers where he croons 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' in his inimitable style. Also notable is the rehearsal for 'Black Or White' which concludes with a high guitar rift by one of the lead female guitarists, Orianthi Panagaris. Priceless.
The only thing that one misses as the film concludes is some more footage around comments from the people associated with the show. There are a few at the beginning but otherwise the film begins and ends like a concert video. That was the intent of the feature for sure but it would have helped had audiences been given to know a little more about Michael Jackson - the man and not just Michael Jackson - the performer.
