As has been the norm, bad reviews and doomsday prophesies greet every new Akshay-Priyadarshan starrer but against all odds they somehow manage to pull the movie to a substantial if not humongous collections. And it is not anything new because even HERA PHERI, when it was released, was not taken kindly too initially and it became a cult comedy only later! The story continued through GARAM MASALA via BHAGAM BHAAG and to their latest, KHATTA MEETHA.
To elaborate, the film was never expected to match the opening of Akshay's last hit HOUSEFULL and it did not, but showed a positive growth during the weekend, netting a healthy 23 crore. The usual Monday fall did occur but during the weekdays the film somehow managed to stay afloat with lower end collections, netting around 32 crores during the first week from India. The best collections came from the Mumbai territory (13 crore) and Delhi-U.P.-East Punjab circuit (9.50 crore), where the film netted impressively.
Given the fact that the film is quite reasonably priced for an Akshay Kumar starrer, and the way that the second weekend has progressed (against ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI) it will not be a surprise if KHATTA MEETHA turns out to be another safe bet for its investors in the end run.
