A modern day contemporary family drama like WE ARE FAMILY coming from the production house of Karan Johar is indeed a first, especially so when he had himself made KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM almost a decade ago. One wonders if Karan Johar would have directed KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM today, would it have carried the look of WE ARE FAMILY?
"Come on, these two are totally different subjects and require different treatment," protests Karan, "WE ARE FAMILY is not like KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM by any means. The situation here in the film's plot is totally unusual and this is where it's core strength there. A situation like this with a man trapped between two women and three children under the same roof is being seen on the Indian screen for the first time.
It conveys that how a family stays together in thick and thin. In a subject which is mainly about emotions, where does the question of look come into picture?"
Think about any family film and you end up perceiving it to be targeted at middle aged audience or senior citizens. Is WE ARE FAMILY too looking at this audience base or is it far more universal?
"When you make a family film, you know for sure that there is one set of audience that you have comfortably covered. However, in case of WE ARE FAMILY we also wanted to win over youngsters," informs Karan, "For that, we have made sure that this is not a heavy 'rona dhona' film. Even if get a tear in your eye, it would be because of that moment of sensitivity that would have touched you."
The film releases all over on 2nd September, Thursday, to coincide with the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami.
