With DEPARTMENT, Ramu would be working with Amitabh Bachchan for the sixth time (after RANN, SARKAR RAJ, RAM GOPAL VARMA KI AAG, NISHABD, SARKAR) if one leaves aside the iconic actor's mini appearance in episodic horror flick DARNA ZAROORI HAI aside.
Now that this film is turning out to be a reality, the first thought that instantly comes to mind is Nana Patekar starrer AB TAK CHAPPAN. It was ages back when Ramu had produced this cop drama that again narrated the tale of encounter cops which was directed by Shimit Amin. Is Ramu aiming at pitching his DEPARTMENT as a refined, polished and far more glamorous/star studded version of AB TAK CHAPPAN? Or is this sequel in the making?
RAM GOPAL VARMA
"None of the above", comes an instant reaction from Ramu, "If you look at AB TAK CHAPPAN, it didn't have any relationship angle to it. In case of DEPARTMENT, there would be a strong thread of relations trying the narrative. As for the similarities around the cops and the organization and the encounter killings, then well you can make dozens of films with the same backdrop. However, eventually it is the story of a character that you are dealing which forms the crux."
Negating the insinuation further around DEPARTMENT dealing with encounter cops, Ramu details, "The issue of the encounter cops will only form a small part of it and DEPARTMENT would largely deal with the internal problems between the various departments of the police and more so with the internal problems between the people of the same department."
