The film producers may have deferred their January 6 strike against the proposed amendments in the Copyright Act; but they are in no mood to listen to the lyricists and composers, who want a share in the music rights.

Film Federation of India president T.P Agarwal says, "95% of films are flops. Only some films are successes. The producer has a right to earn something. If I make one song, I'm spending crores on it. It's not only the lyrics, there are many other elements that make a song a hit. Otherwise, why don't music albums work?"

Says producer Ashok Pandit, "If they (lyricists and composers) want a part of the profits, they should share the losses too. They just want to use the producers."

Speaking about Javed Akhtar, Ashok said, "Javed is making a point about how composers are paid in abroad. There, albums are recorded by people themselves and the songs are bought. Here, the producers record it."

Some members of the Indian film industry had a meeting in Delhi on Tuesday, 28 December, 2010 with Congress general secretary Ahmed Patel, I&B minister Ambika Soni and HRD minister Kapil Sibal. The film producers decided to postpone the strike after the Centre assured them that no arbitrary decision would be taken that endangers the interests of the Indian film industry.

Let's wait and watch how this significant issue shapes up in the coming days.
