RAM GOPAL VERMA

RAM GOPAL VERMA

In Ram Gopal Varma's multi starrer RANN, Amitabh Bachchan spearheads the show with a dozen odd other characters forming a major part of the film's ensemble. While Sudeep, who was last seen in Ramu directed PHOONK, plays Amitabh Bachchan's son, Riteish Deshmukh plays his young admirer.

With RANN supposed to be driven through these three principal characters, one wonders why Abhishek Bachchan wasn't roped in to play one of the two roles that are being enacted by Sudeep and Riteish respectively? After all Ramu is known for his closeness with Bachchans, he has already directed Abhishek in NAACH, SARKAR and SARKAR RAJ while AB Junior has also returned the favour by dancing to the tune of 'Mehbooba Mehbooba' in AAG.

In a multi starrer like RANN where there is also a strong thread of father-son relationship, wasn't there a possibility of Abhishek finding an entry as well?

CHECK OUT: RANN Movie Review

'The point is that we have already explored the father-son relationship between Amitabh and Abhishek in SARKAR. In any case more than the real life relationship between the two actors, it is the bonding between the two characters that works most for a film. You can't make a film with a factor in mind that 'Ok, let me bring these men together and their real life bonding with spill on to screen as well'. Films do not get made that way', says Ramu with a matter of fact tone without mincing any words.

However, just like the SARKAR franchise which got it's strength courtesy the Bachchans coming together, it may have been worth an idea to explore yet another pairing for RANN? 'See, I won't like to have the two work together in a film of mine unless the intent is to go way beyond SARKAR', he says.

In a guarded tone, he also goes on to add, 'Another factor that can't be denied is that there are certain negative traits in the character of Sudeep, who plays Amitabh Bachchan's son in the film. We had to keep that in mind as well.' This pretty much puts a stamp over a solid reason behind Abhishek's absence from RANN which appears to be an obvious expose on media.
