It was in 2008 that director Aditya Chopra teamed up once again (after DDLJ & MOHABBATEIN) with Bollywood's global superstar, Shah Rukh Khan, for RAB NE BANA DI JODI.
Coming in the wake of the dastardly 26/11, RNBDJ not only brought the audience back to the theatres, but went on to become the biggest grosser for Yash Raj films, beating the record of the banner's DHOOM 2.
The beauty and appeal of the simplistic film (with just three main characters!) was such that it became a mass plus class blockbuster. The single screen as well as the multiplex audience loved and patronized the film equally. So, why are we repeating a story foretold? Well, it is clearly evident from our headlines.
Those who remember the tagline of the heartwarming RAB NE BANA DI JODI- There is an extraordinary love story in every ordinary jodi - will find a close connection to the tagline of SRK's upcoming Valentine weekend release, MY NAME IS KHAN. And it is -An ordinary man, An extraordinary journey...FOR LOVE. The two words, ordinary and extraordinary, have been used in both the catchlines to impeccable effect, in order to convey the message to the audience that they are in for something truly wonderful as well as huge, from an ordinary mortal. In case of RNBDJ, Shah Rukh played the common man with elan, and his service class bespectacled look set many a female hearts fluttering.
The case appears similar in MNIK as SRK plays the common man once again, this time as a clean shaven , intelligent looking, but with a slightly clumsy gait and demeanour (as he suffers from Asperger's syndrome). The scene where he pursues Kajol and pleads to her repeatedly (with an innocent and straight face), 'Marry Me', seems to have charmed the hearts of female fans worldwide.
In fact it appears that just like RAB NE BANA DI JODI (for Yash Raj), MNIK too will go on to be the biggest hit of the SRK-Kajol- Karan combo for Dharma Productions!
