Hrishikesh Mukherjee is in vogue. Practically every second film maker today who is stepping into Bollywood claims to be an ardent fan of the great director who made many a feel good realistic films, especially in the 70s. The oft repeated quote from such aspiring film makers is - 'I wish to bring on the magic of Hrishi da all over again'.
The fact remains though that 90% of such attempts have fallen on their face with none actually managing to do anything worthwhile enough. On the other hand there is a film maker like Anees Bazmee who openly declares that he is not in the industry to make films on the same lines as that of Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
"I always believe that films should be larger than life", says Bazmee who has delivered three huge money spinners in a row, "Hrisihikesh Mukherjee and Basu Bhattacharya films are nice and I am a fan of their work as well. But personally, I don't want to make such films. I like my films to be captured through a wide lens."
One tends to agree with his statement. Subtle mode of communication is certainly not Bazmee's style, as evidenced in SINGH IS KINNG, WELCOME and NO ENTRY.
"The way I live my personal life is one thing while telling a story something totally different", he reasons, "World has so many problems and frustrations already. I don't want to add on that by giving a message or an ‘updesh’. I just want to make clean films which people can watch again and again. This is the reason why my films have continued to be popular on DVD as well as satellite till date."
Currently, Bazmee is in Canada shooting for Akshay Kumar starrer THANK YOU which is being pitched as yet another laugh riot entertainer.
