In a recent email from Cannes to Meghna-Ghai Puri, President of Whistling Woods International (WWI), her father Subhash Ghai proudly wrote, "There has not been a single instance when I am introduced as 'a filmmaker from Bollywood' to any international delegate, but in fact, always as 'an educationist and Founder of WWI Film and Media school' ... considered here as one of the three best in the world. And then after a brief pause, they do re-introduce me as one of the renowned filmmakers from Bollywood. Strange, ...but it's a moment of pride!!!"

All last week, Subhash Ghai has been writing a column on a daily basis for a leading newspaper about his exciting experiences at the Cannes Festival. He has also expressed his views on Indian cinema today and his deep sense of concern over the fact that in the last 30 years, no film from India has been able to participate in the Competition Section at Cannes.

"The Indian media is proud to show Indian actors and directors walking on the red carpet but I would feel really proud only when an Indian walks the red carpet with his/her film that has made it into competition. Of course this time, we have UDAAN, a debut film by Vikramaditya Motwane in the "Un Certain Regard" section.

Hoping for the best, Subhash Ghai says "This is a new beginning, and I am positive that our students and the new generation will go places at festivals such as this, within five to ten years."

Subhash Ghai also wrote, "At Cannes, this year, it was indeed a pleasure to see Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan on the red carpet, Mallika Sherawat being followed by the media and the paparazzi, the large hoardings of Mani Ratnam's RAAVAN, and Anurag Basu's KITES being screened for the critics. A press conference to promote RAAVAN was attended by the lead actors, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan and Vikram. My personal meetings with filmmakers like the 87-yearold veteran Mrinal Sen and Jabbar Patel and Govind Nihalani have been meaningful and enriching. And I have also been meeting and discussing with others like Amit Khanna and Nagesh Kukunoor about what needs to be done to make India and its cinema visible in Cannes.

It was a proud moment to see my old friend Ashok Amritraj celebrating his 100th film as a Hollywood producer and being honoured by the leading film magazine, "Variety." At a discussion with Ashok Amritraj and Ms. Deborah Schindler, President, International Motion Picture Production Group at Sony Pictures Entertainment, I did reveal that some of the Short Films made by our WWI students are brilliant; they show a promise that they will be here in competition at the Cannes Festival in just a few years ... Wait and watch. I hope that I have done my bit in forming our next generation of filmmakers with international sensibilities of story-telling."
