He may have worked with top superstars like Aamir Khan (LAGAAN, BAAZI), Shah Rukh Khan (SWADES), Hrithik Roshan & Aishwarya Rai (JODHAA AKBAR) and Priyanka Chopra (WHAT'S YOUR RAASHEE?). However, for his upcoming film, Ashutosh Gowariker chose Abhishek Bachchan, a star with much lesser box office standing. Doesn't he feel that with his standing in the industry, he could have been better off working with yet another superstar?
"I would never do so because that doesn't come naturally to me. To make a star vehicle is a different kind of film making process altogether", says Ashu.
Elaborating on this 'process', Ashu says, "What happens with such films is that just because you happen to have dates of superstars, you start looking for a story and accordingly design a film. While doing so, you bring his own personality and embodiment into the storyline. Sorry, but I don't think I can do something like that."
No wonder, he claims that for each of his films so far, the theme and the script came first and then the actors.
"Only when I am excited about the theme, story and the characterization that I start working on the cast", says Ashu, "This way I am very fortunate that Shahrukh turned into Mohan (SWADES), Aamir as Bhuvan (LAGAAN) was ultimate while Hrithik as Akbar was phenomenal. If you notice, each of these characters was the kind that the aforementioned stars had never played before. For that matter, I even stand by Harman (Baweja) who was incredible as Yogesh Patel (WHAT'S YOUR RAASHEE?)."
