When Siddharth Anand announced ANJAANA ANJAANI with Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, there was a voice of dissent from some corners. After all Priyanka is half a decade senior to Ranbir in the industry and though it is acceptable when an older hero launches a new girl (who could even be half his age), a senior actress pairing up with a relatively new entrant - despite being of the same age - isn't quite a trend in Bollywood. No wonder, the director had to fight a few odds before he eventually got it all right.
"When I told people that Ranbir and Priyanka would be starring in ANJAANA ANJAANI, there was a lot of skepticism. Many wondered how they would look together. However, I wasn't new to such doubts and apprehensions. Remember, I cast Priety Zinta as chic modern day young woman in SALAAM NAMASTE soon after she was seen all traditional in VEER ZAARA? I have always gone by my conviction and I always believed that Ranbir and Priyanka were just the right actors for the parts", says Siddharth who has also made TA RA RUM PUM and BACHNA AE HASEENO in the past.
Today, with stocks high for Ranbir after RAAJNEETI and Priyanka doing well in her career too with SAAT KHOON MAAF in the pipeline, producer Sajid Nadiadwala seems to have supported the right choice at the right time.
"Of course it was a conscious decision to get Ranbir and Priyanka together. The very idea of bringing them together was bound to work well for ANJAANA ANJAANI as they formed a unique pair. However, at that time neither of Ranbir's RAAJNEETI, WAKE UP SID, AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI or ROCKET SINGH - SALESMAN OF THE YEAR had released. His BACHNA AE HASEENO had released though and when Siddharth repeated him for ANJAANA ANJAANI, I was game for it. As for making a right choice at the right time then well, one can't plan such things, they just fall in place", he signs off.
