Karan Johar's Dharma Productions is without doubt one of the premier production houses of the country and holds an enviable track record of massive successes with even movies not directed by Karan going on to score at the ticket window, I HATE LUV STORYS being the latest example . KURBAAN is the only movie under the Dharma Production banner that has failed to be appreciated by the audience and it appears that the next in line will be another Kareena Kapoor starrer, WE ARE FAMILY, although it is not exactly a failure like KURBAAN which was out rightly rejected.
Well, analyzing what exactly went wrong trade pundits say, "First and foremost, it is family film and such films never take flying starts. Secondly, it is a woman-oriented film which again is factor against a bumper initial. Thirdly, the music of the film is not the kind which could have inspired the public to rush to the cinemas on the very first day. And one very important factor that can be taken into account is that the film is based on Hollywood blockbuster STEP MOM and its target audience in India were mostly up market multiplex audience which had already seen the original, so not many were interested in seeing the remake.
However, all is not lost and the first weekend has seen the film netting close to 14.25 crores and in this era of pre-selling many rights, especially satellite, the makers can still hope for a break even.
