Zeenat Aman might have had some issues with Deepika Padukone's Dum Maaro Dum song, but she's very impressed by Yana Gupta's Laila O Laila. The song features in upcoming film CHALO DILLI starring Lara Dutta and Vinay Pathak.
Says the yesteryear actress, "They have retained the original version. They have also given it a new flavour. It has a rustic and ethnic feel to it. And Yana is an amazing dancer. She's also gorgeous. What else do you want?"
Zeenat opines that being glamorous is a prerequisite for all actresses. "Everyone is glamorous today. All the actresses are very talented and good looking. I think it's the necessity of the industry. If you are not good looking and if you are not talented, it is very difficult to be successful."
Sharing an interesting anecdote about her own Laila O Laila, she says, "The song was shot and it was supposed to be for another film. That particular film was shelved. Then Feroz Khan made QURBANI. He heard the song, loved it and used it in the film."
Although the item song trend has revived with the likes of Sheila and Munni, Zeenat believes that item songs have always existed.
She asserts, "Helenji did item numbers and people would come to the theatres. People would watch the film 50-60 times just to watch Helenji dance. The music is much peppier now. The dancing is no longer languid, which it used to be earlier. It's all very racy now."
And speaking about remixing popular songs from the past, the graceful actress says, "People are trying to work with what has been tried and tested before. People have liked these songs which worked at a certain time. It's like old wine in new bottle. You are bringing it to a new generation."
We agree. Old is gold, as far as today's item numbers are concerned.
