What's common between films like TIRANGAA, YASHWANT and AB TAK CHAPPAN? In each of these films, Nana Patekar has donned the uniform as a law keeper. Also, in each of these, there has been a trademark anger that one associates with the actor. Well, if one thought that cinema like this was relegated to the past then well, hold on, as Nana is at it all over again. He would be seen getting angry all over again - though in a different way - in SHAGIRD where he would be playing a cop.
"This is an old movie which was launched three years ago," informs a trade source, "This was the time when Nana was in the last leg of making such films. Even he realised that audience had moved on and hence was refraining from signing such 'masala' films which were strictly for the masses and hardly had anything for the multiplex 'junta'."
Resultantly, during last three years, Nana too mellowed down and played variety of roles in films like TAXI NO. 9211, HATTRICK, YATRA, WELCOME, TUM MILO TO SAHI, PAATHSHAALA and RAAJNEETI. However with 'masala' films back in vogue, what with DABANGG and YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA turning out to be huge hits, Nana's SHAGIRD has been revived.
"Promo of SHAGIRD pretty much conveys that it belongs to old world cinema," quips an industry insider, "But then you never know what may end up working today. Did anyone expect DABANGG to be such a big hit? It too was the kind of 'masala' movie that revolved around cops and goons. There are all the chances of a strong fan base of Nana to flock theaters all over again."
For the ones interested in trivia, this film for which the shooting was completed in 2007 also marks a comeback of sorts of Mohit Ahlawat who had earlier burnt his fingers with cop drama SHIVA. Also, Anurag Kashyap has a full fledged role of a gangster in this film directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia of HAASIL fame. The film releases on 13th May.
