Abhay Deol is having the final laugh. Now that ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA has collected close to 90 crores just in India and is the biggest Bollywood hit overseas this year, he is moving on to his next release SHANGHAI, the shooting for which has been completed. Since the film features him and Kalki along with Emraan Hashmi (who is also riding high on the success of MURDER 2), Abhay feels that this is the best case scenario for all involved since for director Dibakar Banerjee too this is his next immediate release after LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA.
Meanwhile Abhay confesses that he started getting more and more confident about the prospects of his choice of films once DELHI BELLY turned into a huge success.
"Once DELHI BELLY turned into a super hit, I was the happiest of them all as now I was sure people won't say anymore that English films with Bollywood actors do not do well in India. DELHI BELLY is now a prime example of this myth being broken," says Abhay who has traditionally opted for unconventional cinema, whether it is DEV D, OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE, MANORAMA SIX FEET UNDER or EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL.
Today he is happy not just for himself and his films but also the fact that different genres and filmmaking styles are being accepted by the audience.
"Of course it indeed feels good because ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA wasn't really an out and out sell out commercial film. Also it wasn't really offbeat either which means we were somewhere in between a typical Bollywood film or an art house affair. It was a middle path that we took and thankfully audience too consented. This makes it clear that people out there want some strong content more than anything else. It isn't just the formula films that work anymore," adds Abhay.
Well, one just hopes Abhay that the successful streak in Bollywood continues forever!
