The 61st Berlinale came to an end today with the award ceremony attended by more than 1600 guests. It lasted hardly 30 minutes and the results for top honors were on the expected lines. Asghar Farhadi's Iranian film NADER & SIMIN - A SEPARATION walked away with the top honour of the festival- The Golden Bear. The second best award of Berlinale - Jury Grand Prix Silver Bear - went to Bela Tarr's THE TURIN HORSE. Farhadi's film also received awards for the best male and female ensemble acting. The grand success of the film is a rare convergence of the opinion of lay festival audience, press, festival jury, and global buyers.

NADER AND SIMIN and THE TURIN HORSE seemed to have redeemed the prestige and pride of the 61st Berlinale, which had to brave intense criticism for its poor competition line up, with some of the films like MARGIN CALL and THE FUTURE making second hand appearances here after having premiered at Sundance earlier. There was also a feeling that some of the awards announced this evening like the Best Direction Silver Bear to SLEEPING SICKNESS, and Silver Bear for Camera and Production Design to EL PREMIO (THE PRIZE) were quite off the mark. Other films in the list were probably more deserving. However, the fact that the top two prizes were won by two great films, representing diametrically opposed genres and artistic approaches, is praiseworthy and an important achievement of the 61st Berlinale.
