TRISHNA an adaptation of Thomas Hardy's novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles directed by Michael Winterbottom, his third Hardy adaptation, and starring Freida Pinto is expected to have its European Premiere in the competition section of the 68th Venice Film Festival to be held between August 31-September 10. The film follows the tragic relationship between a property developer's son and a rickshaw owner's daughter.
The festival line up may also include films by Polanski, Cronnenberg, Soderbergh, Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, Madonna, Chantal Akerman, Fatih Akin, and other top line festival favorite directors. George Clooney's THE IDES OF MARCH co-starring Ryan Gosling and Walter Salles will open the festival. Another American director Whit Stillman's film DAMSELS IN DISTRESS will be the closing film.
There is no news yet of any Indian film having made it to the lineup. There are no Asian films in the Critics' Week section either that will have films by nine first time directors, with seven of them competing for the Golden Lion of The Future award given to the film that gets most of the Audience votes.
