Shocking as it may sound Bollwyood actress Vidya Balan, who has been swaying our hearts with her raunchy acts and sexy adaayeins as she essays the role of South sex-symbol Silk Smitha in upcoming film THE DIRTY PICTURE, didn't really prepare for the role. She didn't do any kind of research work or for that matter watched Silk Smitha's movies to get the nuances right.

"I didn't watch Silk Smitha's films particularly. Yes but while watching SADMAA I did happen to watch a song called 'Oh Bahua' featuring her," reveals Vidya

Even the director of the film Milan Luthria let loose his leading lady Vidya Balan as far as performance is concerned and didn't really give her any special preparation. All he wanted Vidya to be bindaas. Vidya divulges, "No preparation at all. Milan kept telling me what you will prepare for this role? All you have to be is bindass that is your only preparation. Once you will be bindass everything would be in control. At that point I didn't get what Milan was trying to say. I would try to meet him, go to his office so as to understand what he wants from me as an actor. But he would not tell me anything. So I was really at loss. I didn't know what to do. I kept looking at the script because I was like this director is not telling me anything. But now I understand its only about being completely free, fearless, uninhibited and I have enjoyed exploring that side of me."

Further talking about Silk Smitha, Vidya says Silk was ahead of her time and was exploited in a wrong way. "Silk Smitha was ahead of her time. Because today's girls are in complete command of their life, in complete command about their sexuality. They are unapologetic about it. Silk was like that back then which is why she was misunderstood. People exploited that in a wrong way but she took pride in what she did. She was never ashamed of what she was doing. There was some childishness in her but she was fearless,' said Vidya.

Ask her after working on a bold film like THE DIRTY PICTURE Vidya now feels fearless and uninhibited and she says, "I think I have developed certain bebaaq-ness (fearless) after working on this film. From Silk I learnt to be unapologetic about your choices, especially as women, just take pride in whatever you do."

THE DIRTY PICTURE releases on December 2, which happens to be Silk Smitha's birthday.
