Hazarika to be cremated on Wednesday

Cremation ceremony of legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika will be performed on Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced on Tuesday.

Both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh governments have announced a state holiday on Tuesday in honour of the iconic singer who passed away at a Mumbai hospital on Saturday.

Hazarika, best known for bringing Assamese folk songs into the limelight, will be cremated at the Guwahati University campus, on the banks of the Brahmaputra.

The last rites will be performed by his only son Tez Bhupen Hazarika who arrived at Guwahati on Tuesday afternoon from the U.S.

The cremation will take place at the University where the noted vocalist had worked a couple of years and also written its anthem.

Since Monday, more than 2 million people from all over India, gathered at Guwahati to participate in last journey of the singer who was called the cultural icon of North-East India.

"Actors Raveena Tandon and Seema Biswas reached Guwahati to pay their last tribute to the singer," as per the local media reports.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is also scheduled to arrive to pay a floral tribute to Hazarika.
