This was disclosed in a press conference by the director of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) Mr. Shankar Mohan today. He was talking about the participation of the Bollywood film stars in IFFI's proceedings and how the festival authorities have sent invitations to all the top-line stars of Bollywood.
Mr. Shankar Mohan said that he had personally invited Mr. Bachchan to the festival. He did not disclose if Mr. Bachchan responded to the invite in any way.
The relationship of Mr. Bachchan and IFFI, since it shifted to Goa, has generated all kinds of controversies in the past. There have been instances when the invitation to the super-star of Indian cinema have been withdrawn at the last moment purportedly because of the strained relations between the first family of Bollywood and the Nehru-Gandhi family, the first family of the ruling party. One such invitation had come from the Chief Minister of Goa who was forced to backtrack on it later for reasons that were never disclosed but were subject of much media speculation. In view of this it is highly unlikely that Mr. Bachchan will accept the invite and if the festival authorities are really serious about having him here.
However, some of the Bollywood stars have started showing up in Goa. Jackie Shroff opened the actors lounge at the main venue today and Madhuri Dixit is also expected, and of course Shah Rukh Khan will be flagging off the festival.
