The Tamil Nadu government of Jayalalithaa has finally decided to ban upcoming Hollywood release DAM999 in the state, supposedly based on the dispute between Tamil Nadu and Kerala over the Mullaperiyar dam and allegedly suggesting that it can burst.
The opposition in Tamil Nadu led by the some political parties had protested the Hollywood film's release. Tamil Nadu cinema hall owners also supported the ban saying the film's release in the state could lead to tensions.
The film's makers said the movie is not about the about century old Mullaperiyar dam. Director Sohan Roy said anyone should take a decision after watching the film.
Mullaperiyar Dam is constructed over the headwaters of the Periyar River in 1895 Kerala, India. The Periyar National Park, Thekkady is located around the Periyar reservoir formed by the backwaters of this dam. It is operated by the Government of Tamil Nadu according to a 999-year lease agreement made during erstwhile British colonial rule.
Tamil Nadu is the custodian of the dam and its surrounding areas. In 2006, the Supreme Court had allowed for the storage level to be raised to 142 feet (43 m), but the Kerala Government promulgated a new 'Dam Safety Act' against increasing the storage level of the dam, which has not been objected by the Supreme Court. Tamil Nadu challenged it on various grounds.
The film's storyline however, according to its official website, revolves round a corrupt mayor building a new dam for political gains and personal glory endangering millions of innocent lives besides several characters caught in the vortex of life.
The film is about nine lives entwined by the impending disaster.
According to director Sohan Roy, DAM999 is an emotional thriller. 'It is inspired by many real life incidents. Through this film I want to convey the psychological stress every individual experiences by restricting one's feelings and desires,' he said.
'One cannot go on for long without expressing one's feelings. Like a pressure mounted DAM, concealed emotions will explode at some point of time. Words are not enough to convey the aftermaths of this outburst.'
The audience will relate to the symbolic representation of a DAM across everyone's mind. In a very simple way, DAM999 is a story of nine characters and their emotions. The lives of all the nine characters revolve around the central edifice, the pressure mounted DAM.
