Bollywood's leading choreographer, director, and soon to be an actor Farah Khan was speaking at the NFDC's Film Bazaar at Goa in a knowledge series discussion on Item songs in Indian films moderated by Rajeev Masand. She candidly admitted that her film TEES MAAR KHAN in-spite of having a hit item number like 'Sheila Ki Jawani' did not work commercially because it had other problems. She said that Bollywood film songs have rarely been part of a film's narrative. She also rued the fact that romantic numbers don't get the kind of importance they deserve and are completely ignored in the awards season.
She narrated her experience of working with stars and how does she go about planning the shoot of her item numbers. According to her DIL SE song 'Chal Chaiya Chaiya...' was her favorite. She disclosed that she wanted Dilip Kumar to be among the stars who participated in the OM SHANTI OM song that had 31 stars in it but in spite of all the efforts put in by SRK and her, it could not materialize. The song took six days to shoot.
She also averred that non-Diaspora overseas audiences like the item numbers in Bollywood films since they are lively, colorful, and entertaining and a different kind of experience for them. When asked if she likes 'Munni Badnam Hui' song or 'Sheila Ki Jawani', she threw the ball in the delegates' court. She finally disclosed that the TEES MAAR KHAN item number was a complex one and required harder work. She said she pre-visualizes the shoot of her item numbers, and every shot is put on paper with all the technical details. However, she is not averse to improvisations in the actual shooting process.
