Musical legend Jagjit Singh, who brought Ghazal in every Indian's life and soothed their pain with soulful singing, passed away this morning. He was 70.

Singh was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Lilavati Hospital for the past week with brain hemorrhage.

'The Ghazal King' would be remembered by every Indian for his rendition with Chitra Singh, his wife and another famous Ghazal singer. They were Indian music's first husband-wife duo who attained success and acclaim of music lovers.

His last concert was in New Delhi. He has sung in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Sindhi and Nepali languages. He was awarded with the Padma Bhushan, in 2003.

Jagjit Singh has suffered an intracranial hemorrhagic stroke, or bleeding within the skull. This kind of bleeding could occur when a blood vessel within the skull is broken or leaking. While Jagjit had met Chitra in 1967 and got married in 1969, personal tragedy struck them when their only son Vivek died at 21 in a road accident in 1990.

Actor Anupam Kher said people will remember him for his gentleness. "It was gentle, soothing and from the heart," said Kher. Singer Pankaj Udhas said it was a big loss for the world of music. "His style was something incomparable, unparalleled. His voice was one in a billion. He was full of passion, life and humour," said Udhas.
