1942 - A LOVE STORY's superhit song 'Ek ladki ko dekha...' was an afterthought
April 3, 2012 12:31:51 PM IST Rajesh Kumar Singh, Glamsham Editorial
'Ek ladki ko dekha to aisa laga...' song was not originally part of the film's script and was included at the last moment at the gentle prodding of the film's lyricist Javed Akhtar who strongly felt that there was scope for it in Vinod Chopra's historical magnum opus and Bollywood musical 1942-A LOVE STORY.
This was revealed in a post-screening discussion during the ongoing retrospective of technically upgraded Vinod Chopra films at PVR, Juhu, Mumbai.
The song went on to become a chartbuster and more than the film, its music made waves and contributed in large measures to the revival of melody that had gone out of Indian film music.
The film also turned out to be the swan song of R.D. Burman who passed away on January 4, 1994, well before the film's release on 15th April, 1994. He was awarded Filmfare trophy for the best music director posthumously. Javed Akhtar called the late music director a true and rare genius and recalled his prodigal capacity to create extraordinary music on the spur of the moment. The film swept all Filmfare awards related to music including best lyricist - Javed Akhtar for 'Ek ladki ko dekha', best male playback singer - Kumar Sanu for ''Ek ladki ko dekha'', best female playback singer- Kavita Krishnamurthy for ''Pyaar hua chupke se'', and best sound design - Jitendra Chaudhary, Namita Nayak.
