It is a known story that before Rana Daggubati was roped in for DEPARTMENT, it was Abhishek Bachchan who was supposed to play the part of the honest cop. However date issues resulted in Rana being summoned on an almost overnight note and the young actor was glad to step in.
Though one would have felt that this knee jerk action may have been difficult to absorb for Rana, the DUM MAARO DUM actor reveals that he knew about the film's plot from the very beginning. Reason? He shares a comfortable relationship with director Ram Gopal Varma for quite some time due to their common Hyderabadi roots.
"I have known Ramu for a very long time since my growing up years. Then during DUM MAARO DUM days I reconnected with him. At that time he was developing the story. Even though Abhishek was supposed to do it then, he told me about their story. It is a different matter that I stepped in instead and this is when he narrated the whole script to me. Of course it was an instant 'yes' from me," reveals Rana.
With seniors like Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt around, it was Ramu who ensured that Rana shed his inhibitions whatsoever and gain some real time experience as an intense actor.
"For months he helped me prepare by having those regular meetings and note sharing. He used to ask me certain things about the film and corrected me at every step. Also, he ensured that there was enough authenticity in every scene," informs Rana, "He took a personal interest in ensuring that I was up to the mark and constantly fine-tuned my acting skills. His constant conversations with me really helped."
Well, we hope that shows on screen once DEPARTMENT arrives in theatres on 18th May.
