Sajid-Farhad: Salman Bhai changed our lives
August 28, 2012 07:01:02 PM IST By Rachana Sheth, Glamsham Editorial
If today filmmakers like Rohit Shetty, Sajid Khan, etc are sitting pretty on the top and relishing the 100 crore game with their films - GOLMAAL series, HOUSEFULL 2, READY, BOL BACHCHAN, SINGHAM then that's the magic of brothers Sajid and Farhad, who swept you off your feet with their impressive one-liners, gags & punches or some great dialoguebaazi. Today Sajid-Farhad are the most sought after writers of Bollywood. The duo has created a record of sorts. Within a span of 18 months they have been credited with five back-to-back films that have crossed 100 crore mark.
Sajid-Farhad are overwhelmed seeing the response from the audience, however they feel with success there is an underlying pressure of delivering also as the expectations rise high. Says Farhad, ''God has been really kind. We are humbled with the kind of response and love that we've got from the audience. One should know one's work and respect one's profession & forte. If you give 100% to your audience you'll get back 200% from them. We really feel proud of being part of 100 crore club. 18months and five films...it's a great record!!...But there is an inherent increasing pressure with each film now. As you have to deliver and maintain that record. We are not magicians. It's sheer hard work, blessings of God & loved ones and lastly the entire credit goes to the audience who loved our work.''
Probe the duo what makes their lines a HIT with the audience and they say, ''Today if audiences feel the connection with our dialogues & lines & they clap, whistle over it then it's because at one point of time even we were audience. We used to watch films in cinema halls - in fact we have watched films sitting in stall and balcony & gauged the reaction of audience, laughed on certain one-liners along with them. All of that was a great learning experience for us. So we kind of know what works with audience. You have to write for audience as they pay 200 bucks and come to get entertained. So they should get their value's worth...,'' the duo adds, ''We find our creativity in common man. From different ages to the way different people speak.''
Farhad says dialogues form an essential part in Bollywood films. They spice up the goings. ''Besides the staple music & dance, Bollywood films are incomplete without dialogues. They contribute a lot in a film's success. In fact Bollywood mai dialogue baazi hi sab kuch hai. Hindi films work because of dialogues. However great & important the content may be but dialoguebaazi stays for long time. It instills life in the particular character. Look at the classic example of SHOLAY. BOL BACHCHAN's broken English made the character of Ajay Devgn so adorable.''
Sajid-Farhad find the dialogues of AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY, penned by Kader Khan, most fascinating. ''AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY has the most happening dialogues. We have grown up on these kinds of films.' Other than Kader Khan they admire Salim-Javed's work. 'Salim-Javed has done magic in Indian Cinema. The kind of mark the duo has created no other writers could do it. Their writing did wonders. Such was their impact people used to watch the films in their name. We hope we can reach that level,'' says Farhad.
Almost all of Rohit Shetty's films have been penned by Sajid-Farhad and they share great tuning with the filmmaker. ''Rohit Shetty is a family. We have a great tuning. We understand each other's pulse. And our successful association is an evidence of that,'' Farhad says and adds, ''Both Rohit and Sajid are brilliant filmmakers. They know what their audiences want and deliver accordingly.''
Ask them about writing only for commercial entertainers & comedies and they say, ''It's a tough job. It's easy to write for serious genres but it's very difficult to come up with something interesting every time for commercial entertainers. It's a challenge writing for entertainers & comedies.''
Though today the twosome are regarded as the most bankable writers of Bollywood, they had their share of struggles. Coming from a non-filmy background, it was not easy to find foothold in B-town. However, their life changed once they came in Salman Khan's contact. It was Salman who earned Sajid-Farhad a big break in the industry. He recommended duo's name to David Dhawan for the film HUM KISISE KUM NAHIN. Says Farhad, ''Today whatever we have achieved it's because of our family's support. We had no Godfather, no contact in the industry. Salman Bhai gave us big break and introduced us to David Dhawan. We did HUM KISISE KUM NAHIN and from there on there was no looking back.''
Sajid-Farhad have written the lyrics for the films like HUM KISISE KUM NAHIN, CHOR MACHAAYE SHOR, MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S, LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, SUNDAY, BOL BACHCHAN. The duo also wrote screenplay and dialogues of Ram Gopal Varma's film SHIVA.
