Whenever achievements of Indian sports are talked about, the first name that immediately comes into mind is that of Milkha Singh. Had it been any other country, a film highlighting the unique achievements could indeed have been made long time ago! But India being India, where sports is not given the priority that it deserves, it has taken more than six decades for the cinematic fraternity to come out with a film delineating the path of his growth and the phenomena that Milkha Singh became in his lifetime. The trailer that has been released along with release of TALAASH - THE ANSWER LIES WITHIN indeed have created a sense of anticipation about BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG.
One may argue that PAAN SINGH TOMAR ought to be the first realistic sports film of the country, and there would be an agreement for the premise, but it would be partial. PAAN SINGH TOMAR was a conjunction of a sports and dacoitery while BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG is a film where sports is the predominant motive.
Farhan Akhtar as a Sikh seems to have brought a sobriety of performance of a Sikh character. It could also emerge as a watershed film as far as Sikhs have been portrayed in the film so far. The Sikhs have invariably been portrayed as boisterous, loud on the cinematic screen, but it is not the reality. The real Sikh living in the villages and who has been responsible for ushering in the green revolution and represents a spirit of innovation and fearlessness, is what has been portrayed in BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG.
May be, every issue has a time for it to become crystallized as a reality and same seems to have been the case with making a biopic on the life of Milkha Singh and it needed a director of the type of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and the creative mind of the kind of Farhan Akhtar to tell the world, more so the country, how phenomenal the achievement was of Milkha Singh for our country. The generational shift in the world of cinema, and the young breed of directors and producers who look for innovative content to make cinematic viewing an experience as also to drive home a sense of pride in our achievements of the past seems to have been the trigger to make the life of Milkha Singh a reality through BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG.
Even a Farhan Akhtar has developed six pack abs to portray the character of Milkha Singh in BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG and it would be interesting to watch when the film finally releases in June 2013 whether Farhan Akhtar as a solo hero would be able to carve his niche as the solo performer at the box office. Whatever be the case, one thing is for sure; BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG is going to be one of the significant achievements by the cinematic fraternity and should be the trigger for other filmmakers to bring into limelight such forgotten heroes who have made the country proud with their achievements.
