The passing away of renowned poet and highly acclaimed lyricist Shahryar yesterday has definitely left a void in the literary world that cannot be filled and has left its patrons in a state of shock and sorrow.
It was director Muzaffar Ali who introduced Shahryar to Hindi films, and his soulful and heartfelt lyrics for films like GAMAN, UMRAO JAAN and ANJUMAN are still very popular. Songs like 'Seene mein jalan, Aankhon mein toofan sa kyun hai, Is shahar mein har ek shaksh pareshan sa kyun hai,' from GAMAN sung by Suresh Wadkar and 'Dil cheez kya hai' or even 'Yeh kya jagah hai doston' (UMRAO JAAN) are best known for their wonderful lyrics that just blend seamlessly with the screenplay of the films. He also wrote the lyrics of Yash Chopra's FAASLE.
Director Muzaffar Ali has fond remembrance of his personal friend and says, ''I am simply bereft of words, it seems as if I have lost my voice.' The multifaceted director goes on to say, 'I thought of making my first film GAMAN because of my association with him and his poetry (shayri). My association dates back to 1963 where I first met Shahryar sahab in Aligarh, where I had gone to pursue my higher academics. Though I was enrolled in Science it was his influence that led me to the world of art and literature. When I was making GAMAN, Shahryar sahib had already written the song 'Seene Mein Jalan' and I used it because it went wonderfully well with the proceedings of the film. Even 'Justuju jiski thi, Usko toh na paya hamne' (UMRAO JAAN) was written much before UMRAO JAAN, but I used it and made a few changes to suit the script.' He signs off saying, 'I don't know how I will work without him, in fact I am scared to even think of working without him.''
Well, no doubt the death of the winner of the highest literary award Jnanpith, Akhlaq Mohammed Khan (alias Shahryar) has definitely left a void that cannot be filled and we at Glamsham also mourn his loss and wish his soul rest in peace.
