Valentine week, not so favourable for the industry!
February 14, 2012 10:48:23 AM IST Abid, Glamsham Editorial
For quite a long time filmmakers have been trying to cash in on the Valentine week and we have had numerous examples of big banners releasing their movies around this time.
However, a peek into the box-office performance of the films that released during the Valentine week in the past few years presents quite a not-so-bright picture, and proves that the season of love is not very conducive for the business of films.
In fact one can remember as far back as 2002 when Dharmesh Darshan's HAAN MAINE BHI PYAR KIYA HAI released on 15th February and failed to appeal to the audience. Starring the then real life couple, Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor, along with a superb cameo from Akshay Kumar, and not to forget some melodious super hit music by melody kings, Nadeem-Shravan, the film had everything going for it, but did not meet the expectations and failed to cash in on the Valentine week, despite it being a heavy duty romantic flick.
The last four years, 2008-2012, have seen only two movies coming up trumps during the Valentine week, and they are JODHAA AKBAR (15th Feb 2008) and MY NAME IS KHAN (12th February 2010). The rest- BILLU, JUGAAD, STONEMAN MURDERS (2009) and 7 KHOON MAAF (2011) etc. have all failed at the ticket window.
With Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer, EK MAIN AUR EKK TU, which released on 10th February not matching up to expectations of the trade and failing to get a good opening, despite the fact that it belonged to the highly popular rom-com genre, and had the backing of a big banner like Karan Johar's Dharma Production, good music etc, the fact is highlighted yet again. We must add that EMAET will definitely turn out to be a commercially successful film, but more was expected from the rom-com, more so because Valentine Day is round the corner.
And before we leave, we cannot help but notice that the last two movie which have turned out to be hits during the Valentine week, JODHAA AKBAR and MY NAME IS KHAN, star Hrithik Roshan and Shanrukh Khan respectively, and they are also the two stars whose films DON 2-THE KING IS BACK and AGNEEPATH have been the last two hits for Bollywood!
