Now that PAAN SINGH TOMAR is finally releasing, it must be a sigh of relief for director Tigmanshu Dhulia as he has carried this dream ever since he assisted Shekhar Kapoor on BANDIT QUEEN.
''Tigmanshu did tell me that it was his dream to tell the story of Paan Singh Tomar', divulges Irrfan Khan who plays the lead role in the film, 'While researching for BANDIT QUEEN, he had come across this article about an athlete turned dacoit. He apparently made up his mind that his first film as a director would be about Paan Singh only. It almost became a compulsion for him.''
As luck would have it though, the going wasn't as easy for Tigmanshu. As a first timer who wanted to start his career with an unconventional tale, there was a long period of struggle involved for the filmmaker who instead started with films like HAASIL and CHARAS. It was only eight years later that UTV showed confidence in his idea and agreed to back his research. Buoyed by the go ahead that he had received, the next obvious step for him was to reach out to Irrfan and ask him to play the central role. CHECK OUT: Irrfan Khan- the new Mr. Perfectionist!
''When he told me about the film, I was moved. On further hearing the narration I thought that it was a role of a lifetime. After all, such kinds of roles are hardly written today. For any actor too this is a dream and I had no reasons to say 'no' to the film. I was immediately on the job'', details Irrfan.
Also starring Mahie Gill and Vipin Sharma, PAAN SINGH TOMAR releases this Friday.
