Hindi film industry has had this trend that the film-star would work with a particular production house, with a particular director and the associated paraphernalia. One of the most visible manifestations of this kind is the combination of Ajay Devgn and director Rohit Shetty. But this combination would take a break with CHENNAI EXPRESS where Rohit Shetty would be working with Shahrukh Khan.
In the same manner it would happen for the first time that Salman Khan is working for the Yash Raj Films banner in EK THA TIGER, which incidentally has started making waves on account of the trailers that have been released.
May be it is the demand of the time and the script which now determines the star to be chosen to act in the film, and not factoring in the relationship that a director and a film star have between them. One such example is Karan Johar, for whom Shahrukh Khan had been a regular fixture, before he took Saif Ali Khan to star in KURBAAN. The choice of Saif Ali Khan in Karan Johar banner was dictated by the subject matter that was chosen in KURBAAN. In the same manner Karan Johar's STUDENT OF THE YEAR is a film which has a clutch of new actors, but good friend Shahrukh Khan would be playing a cameo in the film
SHAHRUKH KHAN and ROHIT SHETTY
May be the stars and the production houses have veneered around to the fact that the audience of the present times has become matured and therefore a star performing all kinds of role for a particular banner may not be convincing to the audience, so the choice of the star to enact a role has to be guided by the content that is to be filmed.
Cynics may carp that relationship is what is more important than the commercial interests, but the fact of the matter is that a hit film provides longevity to the acting career of the star as also the production house. Everybody who is into the business of film making is into it with the expectation that their films would be a commercial success and to make it a success compromises should not be made. The trend of going outside the comfort zones to make films has seen a savory side as well in the world of Hindi films. It happened when Farah Khan cast Akshay Kumar in TEES MAAR KHAN after phenomenal success of MAIN HOON NA. It had created quite a lot of bad blood between Shahrukh Khan and Farah Khan and it indeed would be a acid test for her with JOKER, as industry would be watching with interest whether the magic that the combination of Shahrukh Khan and Farah Khan had been created through MAIN HOON NA was more a by-product of star power of King Khan or whether Farah Khan is also now an accomplished director.
One thing is for sure, the new breed of directors and even the present actors are ready to experiment and this is a good trend for the film industry. One only hopes that more and more stars and production houses would step out of their comfort zones and give the viewers an experience of cinema viewing that would be savored.
