As the tits bits associated with his life started coming out through his various associates, one thing that emerged as the underlining motif was the fact that Rajesh Khanna indeed in all probability was the only star who featured in maximum number of songs eulogizing the virtues of Zindagi or the futility of it.
This could be the primary reason why the fan following of Rajesh Khanna was legendary. As it has emerged from the scores of anecdotes being shared by his friends and well wishers, his closest friends were Kishore Kumar and R D Burman, so they had ensured their best for Kaka, but even with other music directors as well the quotient of success where the virtues or futility of life were brought into relief was quite high.
Among the most famous songs picturised on him was 'Zindagi Kaise Hai Paheli Hai', written by Gulzar and set to score by Salil Chaudhary it underlined the enigma called life in succinct detail, and this is one of the reasons the song continues to enthrall whenever it plays. It was one of those rare times when Manna Dey had done the voice over for Kaka and the song is an ever green hit. Manna Dey in fact had sung one more classical song picturised on Rajesh Khanna underlining the futility of life, "Tum bin Jeevan kaisa jeevan", and it again is one of the most popular songs that Manna Dey had sung.
In the same manner the song, 'Zindagi ke safar mein gujar jaate hai jo makam' from the film AAP KI KASAM is again an ever green song. Manna Dey speaking about Rajesh Khanna's performance in a song underlined the fact that he brought a life to it, and this was the reason why the songs became such smash hits. When he sang the song 'Zindagi ek safar hai suhana', riding a Bullet motorcycle with Hema Malini pillion riding behind in ANDAZ, it was the best publicity that Bullet motor cycle could dream about as a vehicle for romance and one does not know whether this was the catalytic factor or not, but in his native stage Punjab, a young boy when he grows up aspires to ride a bullet and also dreams that his beloved would be on his pillion. This was the magic of Rajesh Khanna during those times.
Trust Kishore Kumar, Pancham combination to come up with another gem in SAFAR which was raised to the exalted heights by the performance of Rajesh Khanna, expressing extentialist dilemma of life and the futility of it, in his own unimitable manner, the song being 'Zindagi ka Safar hai ye kaisa safar', and indeed the safar continues to be an enigma.
When he made his comeback after a long time in SOUTEN fortuitously he again got a song which underlined the nuances associated with Zindagi, the song being 'Zindagi pyaar ka geet hai isse har dil ko gaana padega', again Kishore Kumar providing him the vital playback to make the song an evergreen hit.
When Rajesh Khanna made ALAG ALAG the title song of the film, 'Kabhi bekhudi ne maara' again underlined the futility of life, and it was the heady combination of Kishore and Pancham that made the song a smash hit though the film could not become a big hit, indeed the lines in the song, ...mujhe zindagi ne maara, was the story of his life.
As Mahesh Bhatt in his tribute to Rajesh Khanna said that there was a strong element of similarity between Bahadhur Shah Zafar and Rajesh Khannna. Both were rulers during their hey days but had to suffer the ignominy of anonymity in the later part of their life. The difference lay in the fact that the fans of the nazms of Bahadur Shah Zafar were few, but the fans of songs picturised on Kaka are so huge, that he would continue to rule the hearts after his mortal existence has come to an end on earth.
