'Kamariya' indeed has traveled a pretty long distance in Indian cinema that it now needs to be imported to make the effect as it was done through the item song 'Imported Kamariya', in SHANGHAI picturised on British actor Scarlett Mellish Wilson and the conceptualization of 'Imported Kamariya' being done by Anvita Dutt Guptan.
For the purists and protagonists to watch an 'Imported Kamariya' do all the matkas and jhatkas on the screen in SHANGHAI could indeed be a moment of introspection as whenever 'kamariya' jigged it created flutters in heart. Jig of 'Kamariya' had been a prerequisite bestowed to the Indian stars, but it seems that in quest for innovation it also has been outsourced to become 'Imported Kamariya'.
Who could forget the song eulogizing the virtues of 'Kamariya', which was in all probability for the first time done in Bhojpuri cinema by who else but one of the legendary singers of Hindi cinema Manna Dey when he had sung- 'Kashi hile, Patna hile Calcutta hille la, Tohri lachke jab kamariya to saari duniya hillela', in film DANGAL. It was later adopted into a Bhojpuri song, 'Aara hille baliya hille chapra hille la, Tohri lachke jab kamariya saara patna hillela'. Indeed, such was the mesmerizing influence of the 'Kamariya' that even a Manna Dey did not have any problems in eulogizing about its virtues. One of the most famous ways in which the 'Kamariya' jigged in the Hindi cinema was when the lady on which the song was supposed to be picturised used to visit a water body to fetch water in her vessel. It was after all an inspiration from our religion and mythology and many love affairs had their origin with the 'Kamariya' doing the jig, starting from lord Krishna himself. No wonder in the black and white film AMAR a song underlining the dilemma of 'kamar' to carry water was underlined succinctly "kamar lachke mori bhaari gagariya kaise le jaaon."
Another song which had created quite an impact associated with 'Kamariya' was from Aamir Khan's MELA - 'Kamariya lachke re' picturised on Twinkle Khanna. Then there was the song from KRANTI directed by Manoj Kumar and starring Parveen Babi and Hema Malini eulogizing virtues of the 'Kamariya' in the song- 'Mara Thumka Badal Gayee Chal Mitwa'. Can an imported 'Kamariya' attain the same magic?
A Shilpa Shetty through her 'Patli Kamar Lachkake' still manages to loot a UP and Bihar as she was able to do it when she did the jig for the first time in the item song SHOOL. As a matter of fact in the Hindi region of UP and Bihar the magic of a 'Kamar' doing the jig has given rise to scores of songs, dreams, aspirations, frustrations etc.
So an 'Imported Kamariya' could have an element of novelty as an item song, but the magic that a 'Desi Kamariya' when it jigs on the screen with a raunchy element embedded in it does, cannot be surpassed by an 'Imported Kamariya'.
