SHANGHAI is in news and director Dibakar Banerjee is mighty excited. However it is for a reason other than the controversy surrounding Emraan Hashmi and Abhay Deol face off. On the contrary he is charged due to the commercial pull that his actors are enjoying today. After all it is a known fact that when he had approached Emraan and Abhay around two years ago, the combination didn't quite seem as hot as it is today. However, in the year gone by Emraan's stocks have soared with MURDER 2 and THE DIRTY PICTURE while Abhay too has enjoyed his biggest commercial success with ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA.
''Absolutely, why not,' smiles Dibakar, ''Having said that a lot also depends upon the interest level of such a superstar. The subject should impress him, the dates should match and one also has to ascertain whether he would fit into the kind of world I build for my films or not. He too has to do full justice to the character I have written.''
He isn't against the star system though and is rather sympathetic towards the boundaries in which stars are often expected to operate. ''See, stars have that palpable pressure of stardom on their shoulder. Sometimes it is unfair on our part to ask them to throw off that weight so casually and expect them to do something differently for our sake,' reflects Dibakar, ''This is the reason why even I am quite cautious when I approach an actor in the top league. There has to be a right script, star and role to come together for a film that I want to make. I did the same for SHANGHAI and see, I have two talented star actors with me now.''
SHANGHAI stars Kali Koechlin as the female protagonist and also features Prosenjit Chatterjee and Farooq Sheikh in key roles. With music by Vishal-Shekhar, the film releases all over on 8th June.
