Through the lens: Satyajit Ray's genius
May 2, 2012 04:08:15 PM IST Glamsham Editorial
May 2, 2012 marks the 91st birthday of film maestro Satyajit Ray. Regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of 20th century cinema, Ray's life was captured on lens by ace photographer Nemai Ghosh.
At an exhibition, "Satyajit Ray: From Script to Screen" in Kolkata two years ago at Rabindranath Tagore Centre (Indian Council of Cultural Relations, Kolkata) some of those iconic images were in display for Ray aficionados.
The black and white gems explores the world of the master director through the medium of photography- whether it be putting finishing touches to actor Soumitra Chatterjee's hair for a scene, or recording music at a Gangtok marketplace. Nemai Ghosh is often referred to as "Ray's photographer".
Ghosh's long relationship with Ray had started in 1967, when actor Robi Ghosh, a Ray favourite, invited the aspiring photographer to a rehearsal of Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (The Adventures of Goopy and Bagha). That marked the first meeting, a collaboration of sorts that was to continue for many decades afterwards.
