Tweaked 'Informer' to fit into JANNAT franchise, says Kunal Deshmukh

JANNAT 2 has released and while it is enjoying the status of best opening weekend ever for an Emraan Hashmi starrer, the film has also wiped away the disappointment that director Kunal Deshmukh had suffered due to TUM MILEY under performance.
Though it seemed like just the right commercial move for Kunal to return to JANNAT (which marked his debut and also a successful film), one wonders whether the idea behind JANNAT 2 was to spin a story that took the franchise forward? Or was the story idea there and it was fitted into the franchise format?
"See, for any film, first and foremost you need to have a story; that's basic. If the story by itself is a success, the character works and so on", says Kunal, "After listening to the whole story and concept of 'Informer' (which was the original title of the film), Bhatt saab pointed out that the essence here was like JANNAT and hence we suggested to carry forward the franchise. This seemed like a great opportunity to me and we tweaked the story to aptly fit it into the JANNAT structure."
There were certain elements that were kept in mind though before the restructuring was made possible.
"JANNAT had some incredible assets like music, drama, conflict and dialogues which made the movie a hit. We decided to incorporate the same in JANNAT 2 now", Kunal adds, "It was very clear in my mind from the very beginning that I would just not use the name of franchise for the sake of it but would like to live up to the first in the series or do better than that. We had to live up to the audience expectations."
Well Kunal, while the litmus test of opening weekend has been passed, it would be interesting to witness audience response in the remainder of the week.
