French honour for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: Another citation underlines her grace

There cannot be a much better way to celebrate the birthday as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is celebrating today, her 39th birthday than being conferred with an award from a government other than our own. Today on this occasion, the Government of France is conferring on her the title of Knight of Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier Dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) by the French Ambassador to India, Francois Richier on behalf of the French Government today in Mumbai.
As per the press release issued by the French Government the award that has been conferred on her is 'for recognition of her invaluable contribution to the world of cinema and the development of Indo-French cooperation in Cinema, Art and culture'. What could have facilitated the decision for the French Government to confer the award on her would be the phenomenal success of DEVDAS in France. It is amongst one of the most successful Indian films in France.
Her peers in this illustrative category include Shah Rukh Khan, Raghu Rai, Nandita Das, late Habib Tanvir and Upmanyu Chatterjee. The award would be conferred on her at a small function in Mumbai today to be graced by her family members.
For Aishwarya Rai, being conferred with awards and citations has been a part of the growth DNA in her acting oeuvre. She is the youngest Indian actress to receive the Padma Shree Award in 2009. She was appointed as the Longines Ambassador of Elegance in 1999.
In 2003 she was drafted to be a jury member for the Cannes Film Festival, and she has been the first Indian actress who has achieved this feat. In the same year she became the brand ambassador for the Eye Bank Association of India which launched a nationwide programme to create awareness about eye donation. Once she associated with the programme, the list of donors lined up to pledge their eyes for donation. She has also been associated with the movement to eradicate polio from the country. But how many of us would be aware about the fact that she was also appointed the spokesperson for the International Year of Microcredit in 2003, to create awareness about the need for micro loans for women with the objective of eradicating poverty.
The above instances are a pointer to the fact that the manner in which Ash has conducted herself in her public life has been one of the single most contributing factor in paving the way for her to be conferred such awards. She is perhaps one of those rare examples associated with the world of entertainment who continues to be acknowledged about her beauty as also her ability to use her beauty for expanding the outreach of social causes. She has not relegated her quotient of beauty only to endorsing products of beauty but she has used it as a platform to spread a sense of beauty in the lives of underprivileged and disadvantaged. It is precisely for this reason perhaps that she has not associated herself with a beauty cream to enhance the whiteness of skin. One only hopes that she would continue to gather more such laurels and emerge as one of the faces who apart from being beautiful also did things beautifully to spread smiles and happiness in the lives of people around the globe.
